Wardrobes and a window seat

The brief

The main requirements for the key aspects of this project were to maximise the internal storage inside the wardrobes which would take advantage of the high ceilings. Storage above the bed which would be easily accessible, the solution under the bay window had to allow the radiator to operate to its full capability if covered and also function as a comfortable seating area. The exterior style had to be in keeping with the overall aesthetic of the apartment.

Collaborative process
The images below were shared by the client early on to influence the direction of the basic concepts. They wanted a simple design that would use the space either side of the bed for wardrobes and also make use of the space above it for storage

The solution
Floor to ceiling his and hers wardrobes bridged with extra storage with a lift up design. A window seat with drawers that also covers the radiator whilst still allowing it to heat the room as intended

The wardrobes

The cabinets were designed using extra large sheets to take them as close to the ceiling as possible. Two banks of internal soft close drawers were included for convenient storage. Each wardrobe incorporated two pull down rails taking full advantage of extra tall cabinets.

Bridged cabinets

The bridged cabinets were designed in a manner so as not to be too overbearing when sleeping below, the proportions were deliberately kept conservative to give ample overhead clearance. Assisted and balanced opening mechanisms were incorporated to allow them to opened and closed with minimal effort and remain in the open position unassisted.

The window seat with storage

A lot of care was taken on this particular part of the project. First and foremost the radiator had to be able to function correctly despite being covered, it is the only heat source in the room so this was paramount in the design process, it also had to be fully accessible for servicing.

  • Two laser cut panels were incorporated into the top rear of the seat area, when paired with the combined area of the reveal gaps around the drawer fronts it allows ample circulation of heat through the panels

  • Concealed clamping connectors allow the rear area of the seat to be fully dismantled for access to the radiator and reassembled again with a simple Allen key through very discrete holes which will eventually be obscured by the seat cushion

Materials and overall look

The contemporary timeless design has simplicity at its heart and uses the following aspects to ensure the final aesthetic is clean, modern and refined

  • Quater sawn Oak veeners for their consistent grain and warmth

  • Minimalist slab fronts

The result

The room now has a workable storage solution

  • Two his and hers wardrobes framing the bed

  • A large storage solution above the bed that would be otherwise lost space

  • A window seat incorporating the radiator with even more integrated storage underneath

The final result is architectural grade fitted furniture that sits confidently within the space.
